August 5, Tuesday -- GIYS Opti Green Fleet Regatta ** NEW! ** August 9-10 weekend -- Tred Avon Yacht Club Annual Oxford Regatta, Oxford. Junior Fleet was founded in 1924 at Gibson Island. Over our history, we have sailed LJ's, Barnegat "sneakboxes", comets and penguins, and today, we sail Optimists, Lasers, Laser radials, 420’s, Ensigns and International 210's. We also operate the sailing portion of the Gibson Island Camp, which teaches introductory sailing and how to be safe on the water. Junior Fleet and Camp are integrated so that schedules are aligned and outreach is maximized.

mmm Lasers rounding the mark in the GIYS Junior Regatta, 2007INSTRUCTORSOur instructors are chosen for their extensive knowledge of the sport, their enthusiasm and leadership, and their teaching ability. Over the years we have received resumes from many foreign countries, including Spain, Denmark, Netherlands, Brasil, Canada and Italy. For 2008, our Head Instructor is Scott Williamson, a Pasadena resident who teaches school when he is not sailing. Scott has taught sailing for 4 years at St. John’s College, his alma mater, as well as in Oxford (MD) and in New Jersey. We are delighted that he will run our program again this year. Assisting Scott this year will be Charlotte Tracey and John Henry Strong, both of whom are Junior Fleet alumni and come from multi-generational sailing families with deep roots at Gibson Island. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Who's Eligible?Junior Fleet is available to any Gibson Island Club member’s child or grandchild who is a rising 3rd grader or who has turned 8 by September 1 of the year in which s/he sails. One does not have to be a junior member of GIYS to participate. Our by-laws have a junior member category, and juniors are invited to join GIYS at any time. Any junior who has registered for one or more weeks of either ExtraSail!™, Camp with Sailing or Junior Fleet is entitled to enter the Symington and the Dobbins Island Race Back. After Dobbins Island, all are invited to come to the Boathouse and have fun watching parents sail around a palm tree in the harbor while pretending to know what they're doing, and trying to look cool in their costumes. To Register On the Camp enrollment form that is mailed in March, select Junior Fleet only or Camp with Sailing. Junior Fleet sailors have a choice of mornings only, afternoons only, or both. Camp sailors come with their Camp group. |
